Who performs the fetal monitoring and non-stress testing?
Carla Simpson, RN performs all fetal monitoring and non-stress testing (NST). Carla is a Registered Nurse with extensive experience in Obstetrics care.
What is fetal monitoring?
Fetal monitoring is a non-invasive way of measuring fetal heart rate and the presence or absence of uterine contractions.
Sensitive electrodes (called monitors or transducers) are placed on your abdomen with jelly (the same that is used for ultrasounds). The results are printed out of the machine on a continuous sheet of paper (also called a strip). This testing allows us to check for fetal well-being and to monitor how well your baby is tolerating contractions. This testing is done in differing conditions including but not limited to active labor.

What does NST mean?
You may also hear the term NST when referring to fetal monitoring. NST stands for Non-Stress Testing. This form of test measures the baby's heart rate during normal uterine contractions. Accelerations and decelerations of the fetal heart rate (FHR) are monitored. If there is no activity present, you may be given juice and/or crackers to increase the baby's movement.
What is the strip that comes out of the machine?
The strip that comes out of the machine during your testing includes important information for us to evaluate. One of the lines displays the baby's heart rate. It includes accelerations and decelerations. The other line displays the mother's contractions. The strip is then evaluated by your nurse.
